Wisk Aero, a leading Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company, and Skyports Infrastructure, a major player in vertiport development, have expanded their partnership to establish an Entry-into-Service (EIS) network for Wisk’s Generation 6 autonomous air taxis in South East Queensland (SEQ), Australia.
This new agreement builds on their 2022 collaboration, which was the first of its kind between a vertiport operator and an autonomous electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) developer. The partnership aims to develop a viable vertiport network in SEQ, a region currently experiencing rapid growth and development.
South East Queensland, with a population of 4 million, is projected to grow to 6 million over the next 20 years. The region is preparing for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, making it an ideal location for the introduction of advanced air mobility services. The Wisk-Skyports initiative seeks to integrate these services with existing transport infrastructure, enhance tourism, and improve connectivity across the region.
Brian Yutko, CEO of Wisk Aero, expressed enthusiasm for the expanded partnership, stating, “Skyports has already been a strong partner, and we’re excited to advance our work in Australia. Our goal is to bring safe, emissions-free aviation to Queensland, and this collaboration brings us closer to that objective.”
The collaboration involves a comprehensive analysis of regional travel patterns, identification of potential vertiport sites, and feasibility studies. Engaging with local landlords and communities is also crucial for the successful rollout of Wisk’s air taxi service. The partnership aims to create a robust business case to support the necessary vertiport infrastructure.
Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports, highlighted the significance of the project: “We are delighted to announce our work with Wisk to facilitate AAM services on Australia’s eastern coast. This collaboration will leverage our expertise to develop a scalable infrastructure network, ensuring safe and efficient air taxi services for the SEQ region.”
Scott Smith, CEO of the Council of Mayors (SEQ), welcomed the initiative, noting, “It’s fantastic to see South East Queensland attracting innovative technologies. The AAM sector is set to contribute over $66 billion to the Australian economy by 2040 and create high-value local jobs. We must lead in adopting emerging technologies to secure our place as a global destination.”
The project represents a significant step forward in the development of advanced air mobility infrastructure in Australia, positioning SEQ as a pioneer in this emerging sector. Learn more about Wisk here.
