Car buyers looking for a used vehicle may find March to be the ideal time to make a purchase, as an influx of nearly-new models enters the market.
Industry experts say that the start of the new car registration period leads to a significant increase in the number of used vehicles available. Many of these cars come off two-, three-, or four-year finance and lease agreements, meaning they are often in good condition, with a full service history and a single previous owner.
Ashley Winston, from car sourcing firm Palmdale Car Finders, has spent two decades helping buyers find the right vehicle. He says that March and September, the UK’s two busiest months for new car sales, see the highest turnover in the used market.
“Roughly 30% of new cars are registered in March and September, and around 78% of those are bought on finance,” he explained.
“As a result, dealers see an increase in part-exchanges and lease returns, which means a greater variety of used cars for buyers. It’s worth keeping an eye on the market now, but the best deals might not appear until later in the month as dealerships prepare vehicles for resale.”
More choice and competitive pricing
Among the most popular leased models now returning to the market are the Nissan Qashqai, Tesla Model Y, Audi A3, Vauxhall Corsa, and Volkswagen T-Roc. These vehicles, often leased by businesses or individuals, tend to be well maintained and serviced at main dealerships, making them an attractive choice for buyers seeking reliability.
According to Winston, the influx of used cars could mean better deals for those in the market for a second-hand vehicle.
“With more cars available, buyers have a greater chance of finding their preferred make and model at a good price,” he said.
“The key is to be patient. While some cars will be available immediately, others will take time to go through the preparation and resale process. Those who wait until later in March may benefit from more competitive pricing.”
