London-based artist Olli Hull has been named the winner of OMODA’s “Design the Future” competition, which invited UK designers to transform the brand’s all-electric E5 car into a work of art.
Hull’s ethereal, floral design, inspired by fairytales and the natural world, emerged as the favourite after UK customers voted via OMODA’s Instagram channel. The winning entry was praised for its intricate details and environmental theme, reflecting the sustainable ethos of the OMODA E5 as an electric vehicle.
Three artists participated in the contest: Hull, Jing Zhang, a digital artist from Harrogate, and Dan Whitehouse, an illustrator known as “Super Freak” from Birmingham. Each was tasked with creating a unique design on a white OMODA E5, showcasing their signature styles.
Speaking about his win, Hull said: “As the OMODA E5 is an electric vehicle, I set out to create a design that foregrounds the natural world and the environment. I really enjoyed the opportunity to express myself via the new medium of a car, and I am over the moon to have my hard work rewarded.”
The contest also included a prize for voters, with one lucky participant winning a year’s lease on the OMODA E5 and a £1,000 charging voucher. Emily, 30, was announced as the voter winner on OMODA’s Instagram at the same time as Hull’s victory was revealed.
As part of his prize, Hull will visit the OMODA Research & Design Centre in Germany on an all-expenses-paid trip. There, he will meet with designers and engineers to explore the creative process behind vehicle design.
The other two contestants also shared their experiences and creative visions. Zhang explained her design, which celebrates a blend of Eastern and Western cultures, saying: “My finished car is exactly what I hoped for when I set out to create an illustrative design. I am so pleased that people connected with it.”
Whitehouse’s contribution brought his trademark colourful and whimsical characters to the car’s surface. Reflecting on the project, he said: “I’m so proud of the work I produced for this competition. I had a blast every step of the way.”
OMODA, a subsidiary of China’s leading vehicle exporter Chery International, is renowned for its blend of cutting-edge technology and innovative design. Steve Eum, OMODA’s Chief Design Officer, expressed his admiration for all three artists: “Each of these remarkable artists demonstrated exceptional talent. Their captivating creations showcase the boundless potential of automotive artistry.
“At OMODA, we are driven by an unwavering passion for innovative design, relentlessly pursuing creative expressions that redefine the automotive landscape. This competition embodies that spirit, celebrating individual brilliance and our collective commitment to shaping the future of mobility.”
The OMODA E5, an all-electric model, is at the forefront of the brand’s commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking design, making it the perfect canvas for the competition.
