Verra Mobility Expands Automated Tolling for Italian Rental Cars

Verra Mobility Corporation, a prominent provider of smart mobility technology solutions, has extended its electronic toll payment programmes to include more rental car locations across Italy. This expansion aims to simplify toll payments for tourists and locals alike, offering its automated tolling service in collaboration with two of Europe’s largest rental car companies.

This service, initially launched earlier this year, now covers over 25% of the Italian rental car market, which operates an estimated fleet of 50,000 vehicles. Italy, home to one of the largest toll road networks in Europe, has over 4,600 kilometres of tolled motorways. The country’s appeal as a top tourist destination, with over 134 million visitors annually, often leads to increased demand for rental vehicles during peak season. An average of 137,000 rental cars, with numbers peaking at 164,000, use these tolled roads each year.

Verra Mobility’s solution allows renters to use an installed electronic toll device connected to their rental agreement. The device ensures seamless toll payment, with users paying a flat daily fee covering all tolls. Through its strategic partnership with Telepass, a leader in integrated mobility, the programme grants access to 100% of Italy’s toll network, enabling users to bypass manual toll booths and use fast lanes.

Tsjerk-Friso Roelfzema, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Verra Mobility in Europe, explained the benefits: “Paying tolls manually when renting a car can be a hassle, often leading to delays and congestion. The scale of Italy’s motorway network and the large influx of tourists make efficient tolling systems essential. Our partnership with these rental car companies has been instrumental in introducing this streamlined service for both tourists and locals.”

Telepass Chief Business Sales Officer Paolo Malerba highlighted the value of the collaboration, saying, “Telepass is committed to making car travel easier and more efficient across Italy. Verra Mobility is the perfect partner to help us achieve this, and together we are simplifying travel both in Italy and beyond.”

The service’s expansion is a direct result of Verra Mobility’s partnership with Telepass, which was announced in 2023. Telepass, an Italian-based mobility specialist, enables Verra Mobility to extend its tolling solution across Italy. In addition to Italy, Verra Mobility currently operates tolling programmes in Ireland and Spain, with plans to expand the service into Portugal and France.

Verra Mobility has been providing toll management solutions for fleet owners and rental companies for over 15 years. Its toll management services process more than 300 million toll and violation transactions annually, serving more than seven million vehicles worldwide. The company’s technology matches toll charges to specific vehicles and drivers, ensuring that costs are accurately billed and collected, saving both time and administrative effort.

This move by Verra Mobility is expected to enhance the driving experience for both tourists and local drivers in Italy, simplifying the process of toll payments and reducing congestion on the country’s busy motorways.
