InstaVolt Opens UK’s Largest Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hub

The UK’s largest single-operator ultra-rapid EV charging hub has opened in Winchester, offering drivers fast and affordable charging at one of the most advanced facilities in the country.

The Winchester Superhub, launched by InstaVolt, features 44 ultra-rapid chargers, each delivering speeds of up to 160kW. Strategically located just off the A34 and minutes from the M3, the site provides a key charging point for drivers travelling between the Midlands and the South Coast.

To encourage off-peak use, InstaVolt is offering an exclusive launch rate of just 50p per kWh between 7pm and 7am when charging via its app. The pricing, available from 1 April, makes it one of the most cost-effective ultra-rapid charging sites in the UK.

Sustainability at the Core

A key feature of the Superhub is its commitment to sustainable energy. The site incorporates an on-site solar farm with 870 panels and a battery energy storage system, capable of storing the equivalent of 1.5 million AA batteries.

This system helps reduce reliance on the national grid while ensuring consistent, high-speed charging. It is also expected to prevent more than 94 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, reinforcing its role in the UK’s transition to greener transport.

The limited grid connection at the site meant traditional development would have been challenging. However, by integrating solar panels and battery storage, InstaVolt has been able to deliver a high-capacity charging facility without depending solely on external power sources.

Official Opening and Local Endorsements

The Superhub was officially opened by Danny Chambers, MP for Winchester, and Martin Tod, Leader of Winchester City Council, both of whom praised its potential to accelerate EV adoption and promote sustainable travel.

Danny Chambers MP said:
“Anything that makes the transition to electric vehicles easier is vital for both the environment and our economy. I was particularly impressed by the integration of solar energy and EV charging, which is a huge step towards true sustainability.”

Martin Tod added:
“This project is a fantastic example of Winchester’s commitment to a greener future. One of our top priorities is to go ‘Greener, faster’, and InstaVolt’s work here helps us achieve exactly that.”

A New Standard for EV Charging

The site has been designed with driver comfort and convenience in mind. Facilities include a dedicated café, 24/7 toilet access, a children’s play area, and a dog walking zone. Several biodiversity initiatives, including wildflower planting, bat boxes, and log piles, further enhance its environmental credentials.

Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, described the Winchester Superhub as “a new standard for EV charging in the UK.”

“With our new off-peak tariff of just 50p per kWh, this is one of the most competitive ultra-rapid charging sites in the country. Our multi-million-pound investment ensures that drivers get the best combination of price, performance, and sustainability.”

Continued Expansion

The opening marks a significant milestone in InstaVolt’s expansion, with nearly 2,000 chargers already live across the UK and more under development.

As with all InstaVolt chargers, customers can start charging instantly using contactless ‘tap and go’ or via the InstaVolt app.
