Trina Storage, a global leader in energy storage solutions, has announced the successful grid connection and commissioning of the 40MWh Maldon Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Essex. The project, carried out in collaboration with energy storage specialist Eku Energy, marks a significant milestone for the UK’s renewable energy transition and grid stability.

The Maldon battery system, which provides rapid-response capabilities within 350 milliseconds, is Eku Energy’s first commercially operational battery storage project in the UK. It will deliver essential ancillary and balancing services to the national grid, helping improve overall flexibility and resilience in the country’s electricity network.

Trina Storage played a central role in the project, managing the engineering design, system integration, and commissioning of the BESS. The project aims to strengthen the reliability of the UK’s power system and support its ongoing shift towards renewable energy sources. The collaboration between Trina Storage and Eku Energy is cemented by a 10-year contract, which will ensure the sustained performance and maintenance of the Maldon system.

Gabriele Buccini, Head of Energy Storage at Trinasolar Europe, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership. “We are delighted to have worked alongside Eku Energy to bring this important battery storage project to life. This success highlights Trina Storage’s leadership in energy storage technology and establishes a solid foundation for further growth in the European market. We remain committed to advancing efficient, sustainable energy solutions in the future.”

The Maldon battery storage system is designed to enhance the UK’s grid flexibility at a critical time, with increasing reliance on renewable energy. With the ability to stabilise the grid during fluctuations and provide back-up during peak demand, the system will play a vital role in supporting the integration of renewables such as wind and solar.

Daniel Burrows, CEO of Eku Energy, emphasised the importance of the project for the UK’s energy transition. “The Maldon Battery Energy Storage System will be crucial in improving the flexibility of the UK electricity network and integrating renewable energy sources. Our partnership with Trina Storage was key to efficiently implementing this project, and we are proud to contribute positively to the country’s energy landscape.”

This project underscores Trina Storage’s global expertise in energy storage system integration and strengthens its competitive edge in the international market. The Maldon BESS is expected to pave the way for future projects, further expanding Trina Storage’s footprint across Europe.

With the successful commissioning of the Maldon BESS, Trina Storage has once again demonstrated its commitment to promoting sustainable energy development worldwide through technological innovation and high-quality localised services. The company aims to continue playing a leading role in the global energy transition by expanding its energy storage projects and advancing the renewable energy agenda.

As the UK intensifies efforts to transition towards a low-carbon economy, projects like the Maldon Battery Energy Storage System are essential in securing the country’s energy future, ensuring grid stability, and maximising the use of renewable energy sources.
