Jet Plant Hire Ltd, headquartered in Evesham, has set a new standard for the management of non-hazardous road planings in the UK. Known for its commitment to safety and regulatory compliance, the company has taken significant steps to ensure full adherence to waste regulations, offering a model of transparency and environmental responsibility.
For years, non-hazardous road planings, categorized under waste code 17-03-02, have been subject to legal waste management regulations. However, industry adherence to these rules has been inconsistent. Jet, a national operator, is working to raise the bar by applying its own rigorous standards to ensure full compliance, going above and beyond what is legally required.
Under current regulations, it is mandatory for road planings to be moved and documented in a specific format. The waste must only be transferred to locations registered with the Environment Agency, with full records remaining transparent and available for inspection. However, the perception of road planings as a product rather than waste has led to confusion in the industry, as they can only be classified as such after undergoing an approved process. Failure to comply with waste regulations can result in legal penalties and fines.
Jet’s meticulous approach involves thorough documentation at every stage of the planing process, from removal to disposal. This includes tracking the materials from the initial point of collection, through the transportation phase, and finally to the end user. Jet’s detailed paperwork ensures the process is transparent and fully accountable, with all movements of planings being accompanied by a waste transfer note (WTN).
In addition to its rigorous paperwork, Jet offers assistance to its customers by ensuring that all relevant permits and waste exemption documentation (WEX) are in place. If any customer lacks the required documentation, Jet will assist by raising the necessary paperwork on their behalf, ensuring that all sites comply with the law.
The company also prioritises environmental sustainability by tracking planings’ origins and destinations using Google Maps. This careful tracking helps minimise travel distances and reduce vehicle emissions. By repurposing 100% of road planings, Jet is actively contributing to recycling efforts and reducing the need for natural resources.
Tina Greenhill, Business Improvement Director at Jet, highlighted the company’s commitment to transparency. “We aim to lead the way in terms of the way things should be done, not because we have to, but because we want to. Every delivery of road planings is accompanied by a WTN, and we ensure even those left on site are documented for traceability,” Greenhill said.
Jet’s strong focus on compliance and sustainability has made it a leader in the industry, setting a benchmark for others to follow. The company’s practices are part of its broader environmental goals, which are regularly discussed in monthly environmental meetings.
By continuing to prioritise both legal compliance and environmental stewardship, Jet is reinforcing its reputation as a responsible leader in road planing management across the UK.
