Tips to Save Money on Bus Fares Revealed

As the cost of living continues to rise and environmental concerns become increasingly prominent, many are turning to public transport as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative. Among the various modes of public transport, buses are often highlighted as one of the most affordable and accessible options. However, even with this low-cost choice, there are still ways to save more on bus travel.

Ante Dagelić, CEO of the bus ticketing platform GetByBus, has outlined several strategies to help commuters maximise their savings when using the bus.

1. Opt for Weekly or Monthly Passes

One of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce travel costs is by purchasing a weekly or monthly bus pass. These passes typically offer significant discounts compared to buying single tickets for each journey. For instance, in London, an adult day pass is capped at £5.25, while a weekly pass is capped at £24.70. For daily commuters, a weekly pass can reduce the daily cost to £3.52, a saving of £1.73 per day or £51.90 per month. This approach not only simplifies budgeting but also provides unlimited travel within the city at a reduced rate.

2. Check for Discounted Travel Passes

It’s crucial to check if you qualify for any discounted travel passes. Many transport services offer reduced fares for students, apprentices, pensioners, and individuals with disabilities. In London, for example, a weekly pass for apprentices and students aged 18 and over is capped at £17.30, which is £7.40 less than the standard adult pass. Eligibility criteria vary by location, so it is advisable to consult with local operators to determine what discounts are available and the application process. Often, proving eligibility requires showing a valid ID, student card, or NHS badge when purchasing tickets.

3. Utilise Bus Service Mobile Apps

Bus service mobile apps can be a valuable resource for both planning your journey and accessing exclusive discounts. Many of these apps allow riders to purchase tickets or passes directly from their smartphones, sometimes at a lower rate than paying in cash or by card at the driver. Additionally, these apps provide real-time updates on bus schedules, helping commuters avoid missed connections and unnecessary expenses.

4. Take Advantage of Seasonal Promotions

Seasonal promotions are another effective way to cut down on bus fares. Transport operators frequently offer special deals during holidays, local events, or specific times of the year. These promotions can include discounted fares or even free rides, encouraging more people to use public transport. Keeping an eye on announcements from local transit providers or signing up for notifications can help ensure you don’t miss out on these limited time offers.

5. Understand the Refund Policy

Being aware of your bus operator’s refund policy is essential for avoiding unnecessary costs. Circumstances can change, and there may be occasions when you cannot use a purchased pass or ticket. Understanding whether you are eligible for a refund or credit can prevent financial losses. Some transit agencies offer partial refunds on monthly or weekly passes if returned before full usage, while others might allow the transfer of the value of an unused pass to a future date. Additionally, some companies offer refunds if buses are significantly delayed or cancelled, though this depends on the specific terms and conditions of the provider.

Ante Dagelić, CEO of GetByBus, emphasised the importance of being strategic and informed when using public transportation. “Using public transportation is a brilliant way to take advantage of local transport systems, save money, and reduce your carbon footprint. Maximising your savings while riding the bus involves being informed and making strategic choices. These tips are designed to help every commuter make the most of their hard-earned money,” he said.

With these practical tips, commuters can better manage their travel expenses while making a positive impact on the environment.
