UK Drivers Urged: 7 Ways to Protect Cars from Ice Damage

With harsh winter weather on the horizon, experts are warning motorists to take preventative measures to safeguard their vehicles from potential ice damage. As the UK prepares for a significant cold snap, LeaseCar.uk has issued urgent advice for drivers to protect their cars from the adverse effects of snow, frost, and ice.

As temperatures drop, rainwater can freeze into sharp ice shards capable of causing severe damage to tyres, potentially leading to accidents. Ice-covered windscreens are also at risk of weakening, with pre-existing chips or cracks making the glass susceptible to shattering. Additionally, prolonged exposure to cold can accelerate rusting and increase the vulnerability of paintwork, while tyres may lose pressure, further endangering road safety.

Tim Alcock from LeaseCar.uk emphasised the importance of vehicle care during severe winter conditions. “Many drivers underestimate the potential damage that ice can inflict on a car’s paintwork and tyres,” Alcock said. “We often focus on the road safety issues of driving on ice, but it’s crucial to understand how winter weather can impact the vehicle itself. By taking a few simple precautions, motorists can significantly reduce the risk of damage.”

Here are seven essential tips from LeaseCar.uk to help drivers protect their cars from winter damage:

  1. Magnetic Windscreen Covers
Using a cover for the windscreen can help prevent snow and ice accumulation, reducing the risk of shattering caused by extreme cold. These covers also make it easier to clear ice from the screen, helping to avoid potential damage.
  2. Regular Car Washes
Maintaining a clean vehicle throughout the winter is crucial. Regular car washes remove dirt and salt that can contribute to rust and deterioration of the paintwork. Ensuring the car is clean can help prevent long-term damage.
  3. Waxing
Applying a layer of wax to the car’s paintwork provides an extra layer of protection against the elements. Waxing helps shield the paint from frost and snow, reducing the likelihood of deterioration and rust.
  4. Regular Tyre Inflation Checks
Cold weather can cause tyres to lose pressure more quickly, leading to dangerous driving conditions. Regularly checking and inflating tyres ensures they perform optimally, preventing potential damage to the engine and enhancing safety.
  5. Park Under Shelter
Whenever possible, park the vehicle in a garage or covered area to shield it from snow and ice. This reduces the risk of weather-related damage to the car’s exterior and helps keep the vehicle in better condition.
  6. Paint Protector Film
Applying a clear paint protector film can safeguard the car’s paintwork from scratches and damage caused by icy conditions. Professional installation ensures optimal coverage and protection.
  7. Wrap Up the Mirrors
Wing mirrors are also vulnerable to frost and ice. Using covers to protect the mirrors helps prevent damage and maintains clear visibility.

By following these straightforward steps, motorists can better prepare their vehicles for the winter weather and minimise the risk of ice-related damage. As the cold weather sets in, taking proactive measures can ensure that drivers stay safe, and their cars remain in good condition throughout the season.
