Shanghai Electric, a leader in energy solutions, has marked 17 years of operations in Africa, transforming the continent’s power infrastructure. Since entering the region in 2007, the company has completed 28 projects, including constructing 1,457 kilometres of transmission lines and developing 51 power plants and substations. These efforts have enhanced electricity access, supported industrialisation, and improved living standards for millions across the continent.

Yang Xinghai, a senior executive at Shanghai Electric, emphasised the importance of reliable energy: “Industrialisation in Africa is driving unprecedented growth in energy demand. Power infrastructure is essential for development and people’s livelihoods. Shanghai Electric is honoured to work with African partners to build a thriving and modern continent.”

Milestone Projects Across Africa

Shanghai Electric has made significant contributions to power infrastructure in various African countries, showcasing its expertise and commitment:

  • Djibouti (2014): The company built a 230kV substation and 83.85 kilometres of transmission lines, supplying power to the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway.
  • Ethiopia (2008): Shanghai Electric completed eight EPC projects, including 1,115 kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines and 11 substations. Key initiatives included the BBDA 400kV transmission line and Renaissance Dam transmission systems.
  • Angola (2020): By modernising medium- and low-voltage power grids in Huambo and Caála, Shanghai Electric enhanced electricity for one million residents and numerous businesses.
  • Nigeria: The company upgraded ten substations in Lagos, improving grid reliability for residential and commercial users. In northern Nigeria, it constructed the Egbin and Makogi substations, benefiting over 500,000 people.

Driving Sustainable Growth and Employment

Shanghai Electric’s work aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which aims for inclusive and sustainable development. By collaborating with local governments and industry partners, the company has not only improved power access but also contributed to economic growth by creating jobs and training local talent.

Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric plans to continue fostering sustainable energy solutions in Africa. With its expertise and innovative technology, the company envisions a future where every corner of the continent is electrified, supporting industrial and societal growth.
