School pupils across Bradford are gearing up to design, build, and race battery-powered kit cars as part of the 2025 Bradford College Greenpower Challenge. The annual event, run in partnership with Greenpower Education Trust, aims to spark interest in engineering careers while promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) through the thrill of motorsport.
The challenge tasks schools with constructing electric cars that will compete in a grand finale at Tockwith Race Circuit, North Yorkshire, in July. Participating students will gain hands-on experience in engineering while learning valuable skills in marketing, fundraising, and design.
“This Formula 24 Challenge is not just about engineering—it’s about building confidence, self-esteem, and teamwork,” a representative from Greenpower Education Trust explained. “Bradford is an ideal place for this initiative, as it brings opportunities to a diverse range of students who may not otherwise access such hands-on learning experiences.”
This year’s competition includes both returning and new schools, with several already receiving car-building kits donated by Bradford College. Participating schools include:
- BBG Academy (returning champions)
- Tong Leadership Academy (returning competitor)
- Oastlers Keighley (returning competitor)
- Hanson Academy (returning competitor)
- Hazelbeck School (returning competitor)
- Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College (new competitor)
- One In A Million Free School (new competitor)
- Bradford AP Academy (new competitor)
- Swain House Primary School (new competitor, partnered with Hanson Academy)
For 2025, a new collaboration sees Hanson Academy partnering with Swain House Primary School to help Year 6 students build a ‘Goblin’ car, designed specifically for younger participants aged 9 to 11.
Swain House Primary School shared their excitement about joining the project: “This partnership with Hanson Academy offers our pupils a fantastic opportunity to engage in STEM activities that they’ve never experienced before. We’re thrilled to be part of the Greenpower Challenge.”
One In A Million Free School, another newcomer, added: “Our students are eager to begin this hands-on STEM project, which promotes teamwork and creativity. It’s a brilliant opportunity to inspire them for the future.”
Reigning champions BBG Academy, who won the inaugural race in 2024 at Blyton Racetrack, Gainsborough, are ready to defend their title. “We’re excited to return for another year,” a spokesperson said. “Last year’s challenge helped students develop resilience and teamwork, and our new team can’t wait to take on the competition.”
The challenge also emphasises sustainability, with students encouraged to use eco-friendly materials in their car designs. Bradford College’s Motor Vehicle Team, alongside Greenpower representatives, will provide guidance throughout the process.
The grand finale in July promises to be a thrilling culmination of months of hard work, with schools competing to claim the championship title.
