Virgin Atlantic has announced a partnership with Joby Aviation to introduce zero-emission air taxis in the UK, offering fast and sustainable transport options for passengers.
The agreement builds on Joby’s existing partnership with Delta Air Lines, which owns a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic, and aims to provide seamless short-range journeys across the country. The service will begin with connections from Heathrow and Manchester Airport, offering travellers an alternative to traditional transport.
A Revolutionary Step for UK Travel
Joby Aviation, a California-based company specialising in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has developed an air taxi that can carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds of up to 200 mph. The aircraft, designed for routes up to 100 miles, takes off and lands vertically, significantly reducing noise compared to helicopters.
Under the partnership, Virgin Atlantic customers will be able to book flights on Joby’s air taxis through the airline’s app and website. Potential journeys include a 15-minute flight from Manchester Airport to Leeds or an 8-minute trip from Heathrow to Canary Wharf, compared to over an hour by car.
Virgin Atlantic will also support regulatory engagement and assist in the development of landing infrastructure at key airports.
Leadership Reactions
Virgin Atlantic’s CEO, Shai Weiss, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration:
“As a leader in sustainability and with innovation firmly in our DNA, we are delighted to be partnering with Joby to bring short-haul, zero-emission flight to airports and cities throughout the UK. Our strategic partnership combines Joby’s expertise in design, engineering and technology with the power of Virgin Atlantic’s brand and award-winning customer experience.”
Joby’s founder and CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, highlighted the importance of the partnership:
“Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to delighting its customers reflects our experience with Delta, and we couldn’t imagine a better partner to work with in the UK. Together, we are committed to delivering faster options for mobility across the country.”
Sustainable and Accessible Travel
Joby’s air taxi service aims to offer fares comparable to premium ridesharing services. The company has already completed thousands of test flights, including demonstration flights in New York, Japan and Korea.
In 2022, Joby and Delta announced an exclusive partnership for airport transportation in the US and UK, which has now been extended to include Virgin Atlantic in the UK market.
Joby recently showcased its aircraft at the Farnborough International Airshow, underscoring its commitment to bringing electric air mobility to the UK. With support from Virgin Atlantic, Joby hopes to develop a network of landing sites to make zero-emission air travel a reality.
As the aviation industry moves towards greener solutions, this partnership represents a significant step in reshaping the future of air travel in the UK.
